Organic Fennel Essential Oil

Fennel is a common species in our fields, easily recognisable for its small yellow flowers and its smell and flavour, which resembles anise. This plant has been traditionally known for its several culinary uses and it is still drunk today as an herbal tea. Our knowledge of its medicinal virtues dates back to ancient times and it is reputed for helping to lose weight.

How to use?

  • By ingestion: Against digestive problems such as slow digestion, flatulence, nausea and stomach cramps. Also for reducing the appetite, eliminating fat cells, detoxifying the body and stimulating the blood circulation. It even regulates the hormonal balance of women in cases such as irregular or absence of menstrual periods and mothers suffering from low breast milk supply.
  • If inhaled: If it is inhaled it soothes the cough and other symptoms of a cold.
  • Massage: Diluted in vegetable oil  it is used for soothing skin rashes and hydrating dry skin.
  • Natural Cosmetics: A few drops added to a cleansing milk removes skin impurities.

What are the recommendations?

Fennel essential oil should not be used internally or externally during pregnancy, in children younger than 6 or patients with epilepsy. If ingested in high quantities, it may produce spasms due to its neurotoxicity.

What is the cultivation method?

We are certified organic by Ecocert – Portugal (PT-BIO-02). We don’t use chemical products, such as fertilisers and insecticides. Organic farming techniques are used for growing the plants. We create the conditions for our plants to prosper in their natural environment and so the endemic plant species return to their native habitat (permaculture).

What part of the plant is distilled?

In the case of fennel, the distilled part is the aerial part of the plant, because it is the most vigorous and where the majority of essential oils are concentrated.

What is the origin of our plants?

Our plants come from Herdade de Vale Côvo, Mértola, Portugal. They are harvested by hand with a sickle on the farm itself.

What is the method of distillation?

After manually collecting the plants with the help of a sickle, their essential oils are extracted using a stainless steel alembic by means of steam distillation. This process allows the preservation of all the scents and active principles and thereby guarantees the quality of the essential oil.
