Organic Lavender Essential Oil 

Lavender does not grow naturally in Portugal and it is almost exclusively found in gardens. Nonetheless, since this plant requires little water, it adapts well to the Portuguese climatic conditions. We grow it in the lands nearby our agritourism house and its pleasant scent accompanies our guests during their staying.One of the most outstanding properties of lavender among many, is the relaxation of the nervous system.

How to use?

• With a diffuser with water: After a day working hard, some drops in a diffuser with water help to relax and eliminate anxiety and nervousness. The nice scent invigorates and helps against depression.
• Pure: A pure drop applied on the temples region is very effective against migraines…, and put another one on the pillow to prevent insomnia.
• By ingestion: If ingested (1 to 2 drops in a cup with hot water, 2 to 3 times a day), it also has anxiolytic and anti-depressive effects.
• Massage: Lavender essential oil has antiseptic, anti-fungal and wound-healing properties. Thereby, it is used diluted in vegetable oil (3-5%, approx. 60-100 drops per 100 ml) to treat several skin conditions, insect bites, burns, acne, and psoriasis. Applied in a massage, it is particularly effective in relieving muscle and joint pain, just as rheumatism pain.
• If inhaled: If inhaled, either pure or diluted, it is beneficial for sinusitis, bronchitis and cough. It has expectorant properties too.
• Natural Cosmetics: Nowadays, many people produce their own homemade cosmetics with natural ingredients. Lavender essential oil is one of the most commonly used oils in soaps, creams, and perfumes.
• With wooden balls: Some drops on wooden balls scent the wardrobe and keep moths away from clothes.
• With Pets: It can also be used as flea repellent in dog baths and dog collars.

What are the recommendations?

This essential oil must not be used internally by people suffering from digestive neurological conditions. If taken in high quantities, the essential oil becomes neurotoxic. When applied pure on the skin, it may cause contact dermatitis.

What is the cultivation method?

What part of the plant is distilled?

In the case of lavender, the distilled part is the aerial part of the plant, because it is the most vigorous and where the majority of essential oils are concentrated.

What is the origin of our plants?

In general our plants come from Herdade de Vale Côvo, Mértola, Portugal. They are harvested by hand with a sickle on the farm itself. In the particular case of lavender, the origin is France (Provence).

What is the method of distillation?

After manually collecting the plants with the help of a sickle, their essential oils are extracted using a stainless steel alembic by means of steam distillation. This process allows the preservation of all the scents and active principles and thereby guarantees the quality of the essential oil.
